UNSEEN FRANK BELLAMY NOTES PAGE

The organizers of the Unseen Bellamy exhibition were Acme Press, publishers of Speakeasy magazine, a long-running (10 years or so) comics fanzine-turned-professional publication that folded in the early 90s. Speakeasy was founded by Richard Ashford, whom Alan Davis (the comic book artist) took to Nancy Bellamy. The meeting set in motion the events that resulted in the Acme Press/Speakeasy art show

 3THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE
  • Although this image is of the James Cain novel, we do not know where/if this was published. The style appears to be from Bellamy's 1945-1950 period. A postcard was produced to advertise this with mention of the private viewing before the main opening dates. Thanks to Len Woodgate for the scan of the original art and Steve Holland for a copy of the postcard

 6ALL MY OWN WORK
 7SOLDIER IN STATION
  • This is a pastel on rough thin paper of a serviceman on a station waiting for a train. Not published as far as we know. It might have been called Last train which appears in the Kettering & District Art Society (KDAS) Exhibition Catalogue of 25/05-15/6/1946. If this is the same piece we have also listed it in the unpublished list
 8EVEREST CONQUERED
  • The only Bellamy Everest known to be published is the Eagle comic cover, but that is too tall compared to this one's dimensions

14FLAMENCO DANCER
  • This is unlikely to be Nancy, as the dimensions show a landscape illustration

15BULL'S HEAD
  • Could this be a water buffalo, rather than a bull? However see item 19
  • Jeff Haythorpe owns a piece which measures 450 X 300 (rather than the stated 57 X 45 cm) - could this be the same?

If you can help identify this piece, please email us at feedback @ frankbellamy.co.uk

  • Presumably this is the character studies for the aborted Eagle strip. Terry Doyle owns Episode #3 of this unpublished strip
32LIFE STUDIES COLLECTION
  • Lots of pages from Bellamy's sketchbook are known to still exist. They have been sold to collectors all over the world. Bellamy attended a life class during his Blamire's Studio days (1933-1940, and 1946-1948) and organised classes in the 1960s

35ANTHONY FALLOWAY
  • One panel is illustrated in the Speakeasy biography. Woollcombe, the author, has stated that he did not select the illustration to accompany the article. It has been attributed as a strip. We have no other record of this.
  • Thanks to an eBay seller, this was auctioned in October 2012
