FRANK BELLAMY - COMICS LISTING

INTRODUCTION
Eagle Vol: 11:4 (23 January 1960), p.1
Frank Bellamy was self taught, starting out in a small Kettering studio, drawing advertising. His break into comic strips came as a result of work he was doing for national magazines (whilst at Norfolk Studios) in 1952 when he drew a strip advertising feature "Commando Gibbs" in the Eagle.  He must have come to the growing comic market's attention very quickly, as he became a freelance artist in 1953. He was given the The Fleet Family strip in August 1954 in Swift, the sister publication to the million seller Eagle. After 6 black and white strips and three years he was called on to illustrate a living hero on the back page of Eagle in colour: Sir Winston Churchill. Previously only heroes of the past had taken this spot. Naturally creating the full colour strip worried Bellamy, but it has been acknowledged as one of his best over the years. Many full colour (and B&W strips) in comics followed. These are all listed below

FOOTNOTES

[1] Boys' World = Bellamy took over from "C F Eidlestein" as artist on this strip, who was better known by his real name Frank Langford (see Steve Holland  (2013), Boy's World: Ticket to Adventure, Colchester: Bear Alley Books ISBN: 9781907081712)
[2] Eagle = Bellamy worked with Don Harley and others at Hulton Press and in fact did one page some weeks; two some weeks; and none on other weeks! In fact the very first head drawn of Dan Dare was ordered replaced and Don Harley drew it instead
[3] Look and Learn = The articles are actually 3 pages, with some having photos, and others having another artist doing one illustration. Credits are always given, but as "Illustrations by Frank Bellamy" or "Colour illustrations by Frank Bellamy". The Look and Learn Annual 1983 "WWI Pilots" p. 65 is a reprint of  #450 (29 August 1970) in colour. It is a montage of one page plus a panel
[4] Mickey Mouse Weekly = From 12 December 1953 to end of the strip, "Monty Carstairs" is 5/6 of a full page (The rest of the page is a single strip cartoon)
[5] TV21 = TV21 was dated 100 years in the future - thus Bellamy's first issue is dated 15th January 2066 [6] TV21 = The Doctor featured is mistakenly mentioned in #59 as being a 'brain' specialist rather than a 'heart specialist in #60!
[7] TV21 = TV21 #93 – 98 is drawn by Don Harley. Interestingly many people assume this very visible break in Bellamy's schedule is the holiday Bellamy refers to in the Skinn/Gibbons interview, but Nancy Bellamy confirms this is not so. They often travelled in Europe.
Roger Dicken produced several sculptures of Venusian monsters in plasticine clay which were photographed with Thunderbirds craft. Read more here

[8] TV21 = With this issue Thunderbirds no longer occupies the centre pages. In his interview with Skinn/Gibbon Bellamy mentions he was told [at some point] that foreign re-printers were having trouble with a double page spread. It seems likely this issue was a changeover due to the gearing up of publicity for the start of Captain Scarlet, who now occupied the centre pages, although Bellamy may be correct at the same time.
David Jackson & I discussed what was written in the sand by the dying man - FOCPT - Brains says Focal Point in #142, perhaps Goodall had never heard of Epicentre

[9] TV21 = TV 21 combined with Joe 90 and the publication date moved, thus there is a black strip over the original date of 13 September 1969 and instead the publication date of 27 September 1969 is printed. The British Library wrongly states the former.
On the 4th June 1969, Alan Fennell notified Bellamy that Century 21 Ltd would no longer be publishing TV21 from 2 June 1969. The editorial packages would be passed to City Magazines Ltd who nominated Martspress to fill the pages. Bellamy, who must have been very frustrated with the changes in formats during 4 weeks, went on to lucrative work with the Sunday Times, Look and Learn, Radio Times and then started Garth, the daily strip at the Daily Mirror. He did in fact do a 5th episode that was never published
