MENOMONEE FALLS GAZETTE
Menomonee Falls Gazette was a tabloid black and white publication (some editions had spots of colour) in the 1970s by Street Enterprises. It included reprinted newspaper comic strips from the United States, the U.K and other English-speaking countries.
In the MFG #37 (p.13) the announcement was made that the replacement for "Drift Marlo",
"starting next issue, will be Garth, England's answer to Superman. After the final two weeks that Steve Dowling did before he retired (he created the strip in July of 1943), which will appear in #38 and #39 of the Gazette, Frank Bellamy takes over on the art chores. Bellamy is one of the finest craftsman in the whole of comic art and is admired by professionals and fans alike. Garth is the reincarnation of a Greek god, who has the habit of journeying into the past or present to fight tyranny - wherever and whoever it may be
"Garth" was reprinted from the beginning of "Sundance" - 2 issues having John Allard's work until Bellamy started in issue #40 where 6 daily strips were presented on one page - and thus some episodes ended and new ones started in the same issue
"Freak out to fear" was the last story run and it ended incomplete as the MFG ended. MFG joined the editors' other publication "The Comic Reader" for a time from #164 but Garth did not carry over, although some other UK strips did.
However a listing in The Comic Reader is very useful and shows that Garth ran in odd issues only from #127-181 then every time in #182-226. However this isn't quite accurate as Garth also appeared in the sporadic final issues upto #232.

Do you know if anyone will be republishing the Bellamy years? I’ve been trying to track the old reprints down for years.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing. Unfortunately it will need a very determined publisher as REACH, the current owners seem to have little interest in such a "small" publication. The cost of drawing up a contract is deemed to be more than the profit! Such a shame as it's something we Brits should be ashamed of - no classy reprint of our top-notch newspaper strips!
But don't give up hope, as I've been surprised many times since starting this in the mid-70s!
Best wishes
Norman
You are genius, i heard recently for this comic book and i'm already fascinated. Can you just tell me how to find out exact numbers of pages of Garth by different artist? I hope you can understand me all, because english is not my native language. I learned english from comics.
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance
Hi "Comic Fan"
ReplyDeleteThere used to be a list on a Norwegian site (archived here) but the best place for Garth information is on John Freeman's site here
I'd love to know your native language Comic Fan
Best wishes, Norman
I'm from Serbia, and many Serbians love British comics (f.e. Modesty Blaise, best girl comic hero ever), not American, they are too shiny in almost everything they do. Also British music, series, like Only fools and horses, Coupling, Men Behaving Badly, Cracker with Robbie Coltrane (i was so sad when i've heard he died recently), and many many more. Boycie was Serbian honorary citizen:

And i wasn't precise. I like Garth, but because Frank Bellamy's artwork and try to collect his work. Thanks for previous answer, my thinking in English not so good.
ReplyDeleteIs there any quality color of Frank's work. I know for Daily Mirrors reprint, but are they collected in some Book, like Modesty Blaise Titan Books?
Thanks and sorry for bothering
Hi again Saša
ReplyDeleteThanks for telling me about your likes. Have you seen my page of Bellamy reprints here I'm happy in French, German and Spanish but Serbia is an unknown thing to me! If you see any mistakes, do let me know!
Best wishes
Norman
"Is there any quality color of Frank's work. I know for Daily Mirrors reprint, but are they collected in some Book, like Modesty Blaise Titan Books?"
ReplyDeleteFirstly the coloured versions of "Garth" drawn by Bellamy were printed in the Daily Mirror - look above for "coloured by Martin Baines" but they have never been reprinted.
John Ridgway also coloured one story in "Spaceship Away".
BUT like "Modesty" Titan's "Garth" are printed in black and white with colour covers
I hope I've understood that correctly.
Norman
Yes, i understand you all, i just don't have eenough practice to speak or write in English. But i read comics without any problems, i have vocabulary almost like in Serbian. Grammatic and sspelling kills me when i want something to write down on paper. You don't need let this post, or you can if you will, as you wish. I will find you everything i can in Serbian, Croatian and other languages in former Yugoslavia. And you just tell me where you want them. On mail or here?
ReplyDeleteSaša
Hi again Saša
ReplyDeleteEMAIL would be much better: [email protected]
Use the SUBJECT: SERBIA
Thanks a lot
