Heritage describe this piece:

Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip J30 Original Art (Daily Mirror, c. 1973). Someone has to protect Blanche Carrol's troupe of dancing girls, and who better than Garth, as Clay Fremont -- it's hard work, but it's got to be done! This high contrast thriller, numbered J30, was done in ink over graphite on illustration board, and has an image area of 20.5" x 5.25". The art is in Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection. .

The whole story is one that has not been reprinted a lot and ran originally in the national UK newspaper the Daily Mirror from 15 January 1975 - 2 May 1975 (J12-J101). It was reprinted in Garth: The Angels of Hell's Gap by the now-defunct All Devon Comic Collectors Club (No.13 [No date]), and in the Daily Mirror from  Monday 21 February 2011 to Tuesday 12 April 2011 -  coloured by Martin Baines.

Heritage have 2 Garths for auction and again one is from the story "Bride of Jenghiz Khan" I never understand why they 'lock' the viewing of some nudity and not others, so you might need to log in to see it on their site, but here it's easily available!

Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip H275 Original Art (Daily Mirror, c. mid-1970s). This daily strip displays the fantastic chiaroscuro artwork of Frank Bellamy, from the end of his career. Produced in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 20.5" x 5.25". Slight edge toning; otherwise, in Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection

 The second is episode J24 from "The Angels of Hell's Gap" - Bellamy loved his Westerns so was in his element. 


The whole story ran originally in the national UK newspaper the Daily Mirror from 15 January 1975 - 2 May 1975 (J12-J101). It was reprinted in Garth: The Angels of Hell's Gap by the now-defunct All Devon Comic Collectors Club (No.13 [No date]), and in the Daily Mirror from  Monday 21 February 2011 to Tuesday 12 April 2011 -  coloured by Martin Baines.

Original Art: Garth on eBay - 'The Angels of Hell's Gap' (J56) 1975

J56 Garth by Frank Bellamy

Ant Jones, the organiser of the Garth Facebook page has let me know that an original Garth strip drawn by Frank Bellamy is on eBay.

The seller describes it like this:

You are bidding on an original signed Daily Mirror 'Garth' Cartoon strip from 1975 by the late great Frank Bellamy.

DIMENSIONS: Approximately 54cm x17.5cm

ITEM DETAILS: The strip carries the date 10-3-75 in pen, top right corner, and the number J56 denotes that it is from 'The Angels of Hell's Gap' episode from that year (1975). Considering that it is over 40 years old it is in extremely good, bright condition with no staining, yellowing or issues more serious than slightly blunted corners (see photos) and the pen-work is crisp and clear with the odd pencil outline and minor correction visible as you would expect. It has the Daily Mirror copyright stamp on the back (see photo) and would look great in any collection.

The start price reflects the increasing rarity and value of this great British artist's work.

"The Angels of Hell's Gap" story ran originally in the Daily Mirror from 15 January 1975 - 2 May 1975 #(J12-J101) and was reprinted by, the sadly defunct, "All Devon Comic Collectors Club" in their Daily Strips: Collectors Club Editions No.13 [No date]  and also recoloured in the  Daily Mirror from Monday 21 February 2011 to Tuesday 12 April 2011 by Martin Baines (who is colouring "Freak out to fear" at the moment, which you can follow on Ant's Facebook page mentioned above.

Just like a London bus, you wait for  a while and then several come along at once.

I have updated the recent sales including a phenomenal amount for a Garth original. Are we seeing rising interest?

The three pieces on sale this week on eBay are care of the seller "muddyfunster2001" (also known as Chris Martin of Burgess Hill) and they look to be in very good condition. Chris let me know how he bought them:

"Rather boringly I picked them up at a local antique market from a dealer who didn't really know what he was selling. I used to read Garth (and numerous other Bellamy illustrated strips) as a schoolboy in the '70s and immediately took a fancy to them so I bought them on impulse" They are:

They all start with £99 starting bid and are already attracting interest.

Every time I see a woman sitting/standing like this, drawn by the master I am reminded of the lovely Nancy Bellamy, Frank's wife. She was a great model and very proud of her figure even into her 80s!

He also knew how to make aliens look very alien. Is it a frog, a butterfly, a hybrid between the two?
